General Information About Nagarhole Tiger Reserve


V Visit an out of this world place where you will see the real face of Mother Nature declared as 37th tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1999. In 1973 this project was launched by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to protect the national animal of India. This reserve gets its name from Nagarhole River which is popularly known as Snake River in Kannada and is labelled as the richest biodiversity area of India.

It is a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is thus under consideration of UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be selected as World Heritage Reserve

Other name of this park is Rajiv Gandhi National Park; it is situated at Karnataka state’s heart in the Mysore and Kodagu district.

The ethereal tiger reserve also called the hunsur wildlife division is distributed into three sub divisions with 7 ranges particularly Hunsur wildlife sub division includes three ranges namely Anechowkur, Veeranahosali and Kallahalla, Metikuppe wildlife sub division with ranges Antharasanthe, DB Kuppe and Metikuppe and Nagarhole sub division with yet another range called nagarhole wildlife range. Extending over an area of 643.39 sq Km, the reserve offers a wide range of flora and Fauna. The region is fed by the Lakshmanthirtha and Kabini rivers and the general slope of the land is in the direction of these rivers. It largely comprises of the dry and deciduous forest regions. The terrain includes few hill ranges.

It occupies the region of foothills of the Western Ghats and along with Bandipur National Park, Mudumalai Park and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary serves as the largest protected area in southern India. The tiger reserve also serves as an important elephant habitat under the larger Mysore Elephant Reserve


Finest time to visit Melghat Tiger Reserve


365 days a year is an ideal time to visit this park, however the most chosen time is the month of March and April. This is the best time to capture the sight of flora and fauna of this park.

For bird watchers the most suitable time to visit is just after monsoon but before winter since most migratory birds come from south to this region.
