General Information About Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

You will find more than 230 species of birds in this ornithologist’s paradise This national park is well managed by commoners, Bharatpur is protected by the sanctuary from floods and simultaneously also provides an area to the village cattle for grazing. The vegetation of this area is a mixture of wetlands, woodland swamps, woodlands and dry grasslands.

History


The history of this sanctuary is almost 250 years old; it used to be the hunting ground for Maharajas of Bharatpur. During 1850s hunting was a tradition; shooting of ducks was most prevalent. In 1976 this area was declared as bird sanctuary and grazing was completely banned from 1982. Situated at the edge of Thar Desert, the climate of this place is quite warm, summer is extremely hot and winter is not as cold as expected; diversity of wildlife is found in this part of the Indo-Gangetic plains. Active area of sanctuary is only 10sq km.

Although this sanctuary is open throughout the year but best time to visit is in the months of August, September and November if you desire to see breeding birds. If you want to see migrant birds then best time to visit is October- February
